Is AAA only car insurance?

I am wanting the benefits of AAA, but I don't need more car insurance. Is it a monthly fee to have the benefits, or do you HAVE to have their insurance for it?

I want to pay for the benefits before driving across country in a few months in case something messes up with the car.

I've been a member of AAA for about 18 years, and the benefits are worth it. The tow is free (up to 100 miles if you're a Gold member) and the services they render are part of the package.



I get modest discounts on hotels and car rentals, plenty of trip planning service, and pretty much the best maps you can get - AAA maps are updated constantly, and when you go in to assemble your TripTik map, they check the service bulletins to mark wherever construction may be taking place along your route.



My renewal came last month, about $146 to cover me and the wife for the year as Gold members.

Update: Wow! So the membership is just a yearly fee, not monthly. It won't cost $104 a month for the AAA, only once for the whole year of Premier service?

You don't need to buy insurance through them. A basic AAA membership costs ~$35/year and provides roadside assistance and you can go into any AAA office to get free maps and what they call trip tickets, which are basically directions plus information about "approved services" that are on the route they suggest. Approved services will include AAA approved motels, restaurants, gas stations etc..



AAA is also a travel agency. I get a monthly magazine from them with regional information such as festivals, articles about a destination, new automobile reviews etc..



If you lock the keys in your car once the membership paid for itself.

No, you can have just AAA for roadside assistance for about $40/year. That includes some other perks too, like free maps and guidebooks. Auto insurance is a relatively new thing they're offering members, but it's separate from the traditional roadside assistance that AAA is best known for and is not at all required.

Its the other way around. Every body can purchase the AAA membership which includes goodies like lock out, free tow, travel agents, and lots of other stuff. I especially like the hotel discounts. BUT you have to have AAA membership if you want to buy their insurance. I was just a member for years before I finally used them for insurance. It's a yearly fee (78?) and I love it. You should SO get it for your trip, its great peace of mind. Not to mention when you lock your keys in the car at the grocery store!

I am not sure about what you mean, but AAA has two parts.



1) Auto Insurance: Just like everyone else, (GEICO, Alstate, etc..) they sell insurance for you and your car.



2) Roadside Insurance: This is different then auto insurance. IT covers dead batteries, blowouts, tows, and a few other items that are hardly ever used (Bail, etc..).



Your local AAA offices may provide a package deal with both, but they are typically sold as different products.

you don't need to have aaa as a car insurance to get their benefits. just let them know what you want and then when you pay for it, they will send you a member card
