Can you get all letters or all numbers on a license plate or do they have to have numbers and letters? I've always wondered, and I've tried looking that up online but havent gotten a straight answer.

It depends on the state but you will pay a small fortune for the vanity plate. I have a ham radio plate it has 1 number and the rest letters. The state gives us a bit of a break on the price because they don't have to research it to make sure no one else has the same plate. Each callsign is unique and the Federal Gov. hand's them out. No-one has the same call sign.

In California, you pay an initial fee to have a custom plates made, then you pay an extra yearly fee. to have something stupid on your plate, like
MY BMW. (As if anyone cares what kind of car it is or who owns it )
ALSO, you can't have anything sexual or otherwise offensive displayed. If someone complains, DMV will recall your plates.

Guess you haven't seen any personalized license plates yet? I've seen hundreds of license plates with the guy and girls 3 letter initials too.

In Kentucky and probably most other states, a personalized plate can't follow the same pattern of letters and digits as a standard plate (3 digits, 3 letters).

you can request a special one, within limits .........................

No " All Letters " is too long

Yes It is a custom plate. However it has to be a combination no one else has. You got to figure it out in a 6 letter or number configuration that is Original. You pay extra for the plate. As they have to make it. No profanity either.

My vanity plate does, it says, "STUDMAN" So if you're driving around south Florida and you see me in my burnt out '85 Ford Escort that leaves a cloud of blue smoke in its wake, you'll know it's me.

It depends on where you live, dummy. There are no international laws governing licence plates.

Rules for number/letter configuration vary from State to State.
I can think of 3 plates I have seen recently in my State that were all letters.

Yes. You can pay extra for personalized plates with any combination you want, except for profanity, those that are already in use, racial slurs, and a few other things that aren't allowed.

You can get a "vanity plate" that's made up of all numbers, or all letters, or combination - as long as it's not obscene. But, you're going to have to pay extra for it, and it can't exceed the maximum number of digits that your state allows on license plates.
If it contains letters only, the content it has to be readable and understandable to other motorists. You could have IMAFOOL on a vanity plate. That would read as "I Am A Fool" to motorists.

I can in AZ. I have no idea what YOU might be able to do in your mystery location.

Yes, for a fee. And as long as nobody else has the combo. Also, they reject anything that might offend anyone.
But, I would not want to do anything like that to draw attention to myself for cops or whatever. (Not that I have a problem with them but when I was young, I had a lead foot and got a number of tickets)

You can order a personal/vanity plate and pick your own combination, including just letters, in a lot of places.
It's possible where I live.

Don't forget this is an international forum. Are you asking for a specific location?
In the USA, each state has a format for license plates that is unique to it. I live in New Hampshire, the normal license plate in NH is all numbers. When they roll past number 999999 on a given plate design, they will go to A00001. Be aware that each plate design has its own numbering scheme. In NH you have the default plate design and a conservation plate design.

It depends on the regulations applicable to where you live. Some countries don't allow it. In the USA, "vanity" plates are allowed in most states, but it must be a unique combination (no one else can have the same thing) and you pay an extra fee for it.

ON a vanity plate, sure.

All letters is allowed. However, some states give you a discount if you end your personalized plate with a number.
