I am from a state in the Northeast but moved down to Florida for school and I want to get my drivers licence in Florida but I am not a resident of Florida. Do I have to be a resident of Florida to get my drivers licence there or do I have to change my residency?

If you are a full time college student paying non-resident tuition to a Florida school, you have special privileges and yes, you MAY use your school address as your legal Florida address and MAY get a Florida license. But......If you have a drivers license and registration (plates) from another state you do not NEED a Florida drivers license or Florida plates because, again, you are granted special privileges.

One way to establish residency in any state is to apply for a driver's license in that state. Other ways is to register to vote in that state, buy/rent a home, get a job and file in-residency tax forms, register your children (if any) in school, register your car in that state, establish bank accounts.

Even if you could get it, you wouldn't be able to drive with it. To drive, you must have a license from the state where you are a resident. You are not allowed to drive without a license from that state, even if you have a license from another state.

You have to be a resident of the State where you want to get your licence.

So you have 2 options. Get a licence in your home State when you are home on break. This will then be valid in Florida as you are only "visiting", and have an actual home address at your parents house.

OR - you can claim you are now a resident of Florida. All you really need for this is some proof that you have a home address in that state. Usually official mail like bank statements, house rent agreement, utility bill, school enrolment etc that shows you do live there. The DMV site will list what documents you need to show to demonstrate you are actually a resident. Your FL licence will be valid when you return home short term to visit your parents. If you move home permanently, then you simply swap your FL licence for a local one.

You can only apply for and and obtain a driving license from the state you claim as your permanent state of residency. If you are only residing in Florida temporarily to attend an institution of higher learning your are exempt from having, or needed, to apply for a license in said state. This is also true with any vehicle you might use as far as registration purposes.

To be eligible to obtain a license within the state of Florida you would indeed have to claim Florida residency.

if you look at the website of the FL dmv or whatever they have, all of your Q's will be answered
