Question:
When will DVLA send me my log book back?
2012-10-19 09:48:55 UTC
l got my new car 2 weeks ago and l still have not received the log book. The seller said she will post it on the day we filled the forms out, which is fair enough but 2 weeks on, l still have not got it. l have the little registered keeper slip that l used to buy my car tax with though. l had to get a new licence again because l moved houses and that came within 2 days of sending off for a new one with a new address on so why is the DVLA taking so long for the log book to come through? ls it normal for it to take this long?

DVLA currently say they aim to send out a new V5C to you within 2 to 4 weeks of getting the old V5C from the seller, so I wouldn't panic yet for a couple of weeks.

If you don’t get it within 4 weeks you can complete form V62 ‘Application for a registration certificate’ (which you can get from the Post Office or download) and send it to DVLA with the V5C/2 given to you by the seller - if you don’t send in the V5C/2, you’ll have to pay a fee.

Oh, and I'd suggest getting and keeping safe a copy of the V5C/2 - just in case!

This will depend on the seller actually doing that - probably meant to but has not yet or did so later..

If it has not turned up within 6 weeks of the transfer you can use Form V62 from a post office and the new keeper slip to get a free V5C in yoiur name.

I did this once at the 6 week point and the actual one turned up the day after I sent it off and the duplicate came a few days later

It can take up to 6 weeks. But if you are lucky sooner. These plate change scenarios are a bit of a nightmare and they should not have really sold it you until they sorted it. I bought cars in as px with private plate and would not have dreamt of selling one until I got the log book because it can take so long!

Saying she did send it and actually sending it off are 2 different things.

Have patience, says how long you need to wait if you read the back of the new keeper slip.

It can do but you "need" a driving license but you don't really "need" the log book as urgently.

Contact DVLA and ask if they have had the log book form from the previous owner - if they have no record of receiving it you need to contact her and ask her to post it to them immediately.

I've been waiting for June for a medical licence (which I need for work) but an still running on a cover note. Plenty of time yet.

DVLA state it takes 'up to 28 days' , so it's a long way from overdue.
