Unusual for a licence to run for only 6 years, as you would normally be required to renew a photocard licence every 10 years, unless you were over 60 when it was issued, or you hold a medical licence. Renewal does not mean another test, you will simply be required to complete the 'Application for Renewel' form that should be sent to you and send it to DVLA, together with an up-to-date photo and the fee (currently £17.50 - free if you're 70 or over). It may be that you're referring to an HGV or passenger carrying licence, in which case this will be renewable every 5 years following your 45th birthday. The Government site below is worth a visit.

I won't repeat what everyone else has already said but I will answer the question that 'uknative' raised; the reason why the licence expires in 2013 (rather than 2017) is because although the full licence only came into effect in 2007, the first provisional licence was issued in 2003, so in 2013 the photo will be 10 years old. Hope that makes sense.

Since about 1997 or so UK driving licences are valid only for 10 years. Shortly before the expiry date you will need to apply for a renewal with an up to date photo. No further test is required. The DVLA do not issue reminders.

Hiya, I am a driving instructor so can help you. Once you have passed your test your license is valid until your 70th birthday. In 2013 you will just be required to send in a new photo to update and renew it. You will not have to take another test. It is just a similar procedure to updating your passport every 10 years.

The expiry date means that you just have to get a new card - fill in a form and send off a new picture etc.

You will not have to take a re-test.
