Hello Guys,

So I just moved to California and I am planning on buying a car very soon. Three questions I need to verify.

1. Can I buy and or register a car with my other state's driver's license in California.

2. And how long do I have to obtain a CA license.

I do understand that that I have 10 days after obtaining proof of residence to get one.

But I have not yet obtained residence (as far as I can tell).

A friend told me I had up to 6 months but I want to make sure.

3. Is renting an apartment also considered proof of residence? I ask cause I need to know what I can put down as far as the address when registering the vehicle.

Thank you for answers in advance.

Despite what so many people mistakenly think, You don't need a drivers license to buy, title, register or even insure a car. You only need a drivers license to DRIVE a car

There is no time requirement to get a drivers license if you don't drive.

.A rental contract is fine for Proof of residence

All of your questions can best be answered by looking at the Ca. DMV website

Yes. You can buy a car with an out of state drivers license. You have 10 days to get a license? That's a joke. Many people live in CA for a long time before getting their CA license. But, yes it is the law.

Your friend is wrong and so are you. You don't have 10 days after getting proof. The time limit is counted from when you become a resident, not from when you get proof. The number of days is how long you have after becoming a resident to get proof and get the license.

Once you begin living in the state, the clock is ticking, whether or not you have proof.
