I'm getting astronomical quotes of £4000 minimum for a 1.2 car. Even with the smart box they want £3500.

I'm 17 and passed my test back in October. Since then, I've tried getting insured on my mums 1.2 Corsa, nothing. Tried getting insured on my own car, again up to a 1.2 engine size. Nothing. What I don't understand is some of my friends who are my age are insured on bigger cars! One lad is 17, and is insured fully comp on a 62 Golf, another is also 17, insured fully comp on an 11 Punto, with smart box. So why isn't anybody insuring me for? I feel discriminated in all honesty.

At my wits end now, please help!

As you are not 18 you should take insurance or car with your parents name and then put your name as second holder it would be better for you in case of the claims

Your friends probably have had their licensces longer than your 3 months. You don't have a history for the insurer to judge how big a risk you are so they consider you very high risk at first. Where you live also makes a difference. Post codes are a factor in determining rates. Some neighborhoodes have a higher incidence of accidents, vandalism, and theft than others and that affect insurance rates. Some insurers also check school grades. Students with good grades get lower rates.

sorry to say you are paying for other young peoples mistakes and reckless behaviour in the past.

a lot of parents commit to putting there children on there own insurance policies which is foolish to be honest as soon as the child has a minor accident the Premium goes through the roof the next year.

so buy a car less than 1000 cc and old one which you may be always having to repair insure it third party fire and theft so you need to pay for any damage you do to it yourself.

the premiums will be lower the first year is always the most expensive and drive carefully.

insurance is never cheap even for some one who has driven without an accident in ten years. at 60 years of age. at approx 400 pounds year in an old 1.3 ltr 5 year old peugeot.

A NEW car and fully Comp cover will get the best rates for young insurance.

And if they can afford those type of cars and you can't then maybe they are also living in a lower-rate area.

At least you are getting quotes, some can get no cover at all.

That is a normal quote for a 17 year old new driver - nothing astronomical about it at all. If your friends say they are paying a lot less there are just two possibilities: they are telling you lies, or they are telling their insurance company lies (and are therefore not legally insured at all).

Does no-one on here think to use the search box before they ask a question for the 4000th time?

That's about right for a teenage new driver.

Put your parents on your policy as named drivers if they have a good record and lots of NCD.

It will reduce your premium considerably even if they never drive the car.

It's possible your friends are fronting, which voids their insurance.
