Hi everyone

I live in the UK and I insure my car with Direct Line.

I have never had any issues with them before apart from now that I have a new car.

I have several years no claims for my driving, most of which are through policies with Direct Line. However, the first 2 years I was driving I was with another insurance company and gained 2 years no claims with them.

When I took out my latest policy with Direct Line after buying a new vehicle they said they needed to see proof of my no claims. I contacted my old insurance company who sent me a letter confirming these years and I sent this to Direct Line, they said they never received it so I requested another letter and sent this one also but via Recorded Delivery.

It is now a month on and Direct Line are claiming they haven't received this one either although proof of postage and tracking shows it was signed for.

I wish to cancel my policy with Direct Line and was wondering how much of my policy cost I would be entitled to receive back from them.

Many thanks

Your refund will be pro-rata less your cancellation fee, unless you have made a claim in which case you will not be entitled to a refund of anything you have paid and if you pay monthly you will have to pay the balance FOR THE FULL YEAR..

Having said this, if you contact Direct Line and explain that you are having problems. They will more than likely be happy to call your previous insurer and confirm it with them directly saving you the hassle.

Firstly, I'd make a formal complaint. You've complied with their wishes, and have proof that you sent the letter and that it was signed for, so it should be with the company somewhere. There is no reason that a letter that was signed for to disappear into thin air like this, and they're not doing themselves any favours in terms of reputation.

Before you cancel with them, try and get this matter straight, otherwise under their cancellation terms you could end up paying a heavy cancellation fee plus a percentage of your premium back (which is not always pro-rated, especially in the first year of a policy), so this could leave you out of pocket.

Another thing you could do (most insurers will be happy to do this for you), is to ask them to contact your previous insurer and request verbal proof of NCD. The company I work for initially requests written NCD proof, but if you're still having problems then we can offer to call. Direct Line may request your policy number from your previous insurer along with their telephone number, so have those to hand when you call.

Like most questions relating to an individual's own insurance policy, you'd need to ask your insurer that question, we can only guess.

What I can tell you is that it's never just a simple case of counting how many months left the policy has to run and working it out from there. There's always some sort of penalty and admin charge, which is why you need to study your policy booklet, or ask Admiral.

Have you tried scanning and sending the no claims letter through email? You will still have a record of proof you sent it. You will get some back depending how long ago you paid in full. There is a cost to do this and it will be taken off the amount you get back. It's about £35 to cancel then you get so many months worth back. Easiest way is to phone up, tell them you may be selling your car and ask how much you would get back.

This will depend on how long the policy has been in force and you will have to look at the policy documents yourself to check this

Typically if you cancel in the first month you get back only 75% of the total and it works down on a sliding scale from there where cancelling in the last 3 months usually gets no refund at all

most companies tend to have small print telling you this in documentation issued with policy.

check that first.

most will do a sort of pro rata plus a minimum charge so you may well lose around say three moths worth of premiums. all designed to keep you with them of course.

have you tried e-mailing a copy through ? faxing?
