I got a online insurance quote, modified the quote, mileage, excess. Tried a new quote price is £20 more now, why is that? Will it go back to the original price?

So you changed the original details and it went up £20, and you changed back to original but remained that £20 increase, is that you are saying?

If you modify you details to the original, it probably would, but I`m sure the whole transaction will be recorded, after all how many times have you recieved e mails from companies you have requested a quote from.
I went on line for a quote from my existing provider because I had changed postcode and they quoted £99, well it is an old car and we are relatively crime free, when I recieved my paper renewal they quoted £270, which was still 50% of my previous premium. I mentioned the online quote and they e mailed me back and honoured the £99. So these things are stored.

Because quotes from 'aggregator websites' make a lot of assumptions to provide the cheapest quotes possible and once you start specifying your actual requirements the premiums increase.
I had better explain - these sites get a commission from the companies who are on the sites, so it is in their interests to offer the cheapest quotes possible to get you to go to the insurer website from theirs as even if you buy the policy at a higher price from the actual insurer than thet quote they would still get the commission.
Is this 'Treating Customers Fairly?' Is it Hell!
I am a professional broker and if I sold and offered car insurance quotes the way that these sites do I would have my permission to transact insurance mediation cancelled quicker than you could say Financial Services Authority.
Why not make a complaint against the site stating that the information you were provided was not fair, clear and not misleading - they are also regulated by the FSA.

An online quote can vary from time to time.
By that I mean if you got a quote in the morning and then in the evening I bet you it will be different.
However always note the online quote reference number and the price.

If you change the excess amount and mileage the quote will go up the quote is lower if you accept a higher excess. You will also pay more if you do more miles because the more miles you drive the more likely you are to have an accident. e.g. somebody driving 8000 miles a year is more likely to have an accident than somebody who only drives 1000 miles

If you've moved the goalposts by increasing the mileage or decreasing the excess, I wouldn't be at all surprised. It's a different set of circumstances, after all.
