Hi all,

So I currently have normal numberplates on my car but I've seen a few cars with square numberplates (all being japanese cars) and fancy getting one for the front of my car at least. There are lots of websites that sell them but I asked in Halfords out of ease.

I was told that they only make square numberplates for motorbikes and 4x4s. And that square numberplates are illegal unless the car is imported and came with them. The guy said that I could be pulled over and fined?

So can someone verify this for me please?
my car is japanese so technically it would have been an import at some point? hehe :P

I dont want particularly small numberplates or anything, the digits would be the same size as on a long standard plate, other than them being on two lines rather than one. (so wouldnt be a problem with speed cameras/being able to read them etc?)

Please advise me

There is no law that says you MUST have rectangular plates. If they can be mounted correctly and conform to the legal font, there's no problem what so ever with a square plate on any car.

The 'Boy' at Halfords probably only said that because they had no square blanks.

Yes, the square type (11" x 8") number plates are legal for road use on the front and rear of a vehicle. I am registered with DVLA to make plates, and I have reflective white and yellow blanks in the square size.

There are also rules and regulations for fitting smaller plates to American and import cars-

Display of Vehicle Registration Marks on Imported Vehicles

(which have a restricted space for a standard sized number plate)

Certain imported vehicles may be permitted to display number plates with smaller characters if:

The vehicle does not have European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval

AND

The vehicle's construction/design cannot accommodate standard size number plates

Takes up a lot of time or a lot of tape? As a motor bike plate is quite small what are you looking at, maybe a minute and a couple of foot of 2" wide masking tape. Any device you fit to your car would be assumed by the Police to be there to be used ~ on the road.

Square plates are fine, it is the size of the typeface which is important. We commonly put square plates, which are for motorcycles, onto taxis. so that the reg and taxi plate can be mounted side by side without drilling extra holes into the car body.

Yes there is a law and yes it is illegal to have plates that do not conform to the Law of this Land. It has to conform and the Police can stop you and inform you that you have to use the correct plate.

You could contact the DVLA for verification just to make sure.

To get an accurate answer you would be better off giving the DVLA a phone call or go on line direct.gov.uk and check it out.
